MODELING & SIMULATION (ICEs, thermal systems, fuel cells, batteries)

System level models

The need for optimization of energy consumption, and in case of non-zero emission vehicles also the exhaust emissions,  calls for a fully coupled simulation of the vehicle dynamics, its powertrain and its thermal management. We primarily focus on mechanistically based models, which feature high level of predictability and high level of accuracy. One of our main objectives is to optimize these models in terms of their computational speed.

Coupled mechanistic system level models enable analyzing the dynamic interaction between particular components as well as the dynamic processes within each component. Both are necessary for modeling real world and legislative driving cycles in a physically plausible manner. Moreover, mechanistic system level simulations are also indispensable for efficiently exploiting the design space in the early development phase as they enable time and cost efficient analyses of various powertrain topologies and configurations. In addition to their use in the off-line applications, the specifically prepared system level models can also be used in the on-line applications in HiL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) environment.

Detailed models

We use commercial multi-purpose thermo-fluid dynamics modeling  tools to model reactive multiphase flows including combustion and exhaust gas aftertreatment, heat transfer and electrochemical processes on a more detailed level and we develop User functions to tailor the tools to our research needs.
